My daily routine
Every morning, on the way to the marina, I check the areas that our city’s homeless hang around. If they need anything I can give them, such as water or snacks that I have stashed in the back of my SUV, I hand it out and then see if anyone wants to meet me down at the marina within a hour to do some work or get a shower. At the end of my day managing the marinas, I fill my coolers full of water and ice that I hand out on the way to the other job. First spots that I drive to, is the two shopping centers in the city center and then start making a loop around the main street and then back around to the shopping center handing out water to every homeless person I see. They all need water to avoid heat stroke and dehydration, not just the homeless veterans, so I make sure I have enough water and snacks for all of them. It kind of sucks to have a non profit for homeless veterans and not give out water to all the homeless who need it. I also have backpacks and supplies for homeless veterans made up in the one of the rubbermaid totes in the truck, along with extra clothing I pick up along the way for the homeless that need it. The homeless veterans that I have met, know that they can find me at Vapor Master, my second job but it is also where I work on this non-profit, researching, writing up ideas and making orders to replenish supplies. When I get off work from Vapor Master, I make another circuit to the encampments and if they have been rousted out of an area, then I catch up with our sheriff deputies to see if they know where the homeless are that night. I make sure everyone has been fed and clean them up and use the first aid kits I carry in the truck for the minor cuts and bruises they may have gotten throughout the day. This is the hardest part of the day because most homeless have been drinking by this time are pretty intoxicated. If they haven’t eaten yet, we will walk down to Waffle House and I will see how their day went and if I am able, find out if there is anything else I can help them with. This is how a basic day breaks down.
